after an owi conviction
If you are arrested and then convicted of any type of drunk driving offense, one of two things will happen to your automobile insurance coverage: 1) the insurance company will increase your premiums by a surcharge for the drunk driving (OWI - operating while under the influence) conviction, or 2) the insurance company will terminate your policy. Some insurance companies will refer those whom they are terminating to high risk insurance providers.
Insurance policies include provisions for coverage of property that is damage by a drunk driver, particularly if you are that driver. While most policies cover the property damage, you have to read your policy (or send it to your attorney) to ensure that you are covered. Many insurance companies will either drop the policy, or fail to renew it, if the person is convicted of an OWI and there was any property damage.
dui insurance companies
insurance agencies after OWI conviction
The list of Wisconsin insurance companies below is not exhaustive, others may surely provide insurance for people have been convicted of an OWI, but this list gives you a place to start.
All State Insurance Company
All State Insurance Company provides DUI Insurance for persons who have no more than one drunk driving related conviction. Insurance premiums will include a surcharge for the OWI conviction. SR-22 is available. All state does not refer their insured clients to high risk companies. Other traffic related convictions may prevent insurance coverage.
American Family Insurance Company
American Family Insurance Company provides DUI insurance. They insurance people who have one prior OWI conviction, and include a surcharge to the premiums. If a person is convicted of an OWI - 2nd offense, American Family might still insure them, but application must be made and considered. In most instances, provided there are no other traffic related convictions to prevent coverage, American Family will insure a person who has been convicted of an OWI 2nd offense if the OWI 1st conviction occurred 5 or more years ago. An SR-22 is available, but must be done through a local agent. American Family refers people to other high risk agencies if they cannot insure.

Insurance premiums are at a higher rate if there are OWI convictions on the insured's record, but the OWI convictions carry the same weight as a traffic ticket.

State Farm Insurance Company
State Farm Insurance Company will assess a drunk driving conviction of a current policy holder to determine how insurance will be handled. In most situations, if the policy holder has been with State Farm for a period of years, and is convicted of an OWI 1st offense (and only one within 3-5 years), but otherwise has a perfect driving record, State Farm may not drop the policy. Rates will increase. If however there was also property damage involved with the OWI charge, State Farm will drop the insured immediately or fail to renew. If you were not a State Farm customer, they will look back five years into your driving record. If everything else was perfect 3 years ago, and the OWI occurred more than 3-5 years, they might insure but an application must be submitted. State Farm refers people they cannot insure to Agent's Choice, who will accept an application for insurance. If approved, Agent's Choice will provide coverage for 5 years, and then send the person back to State Farm.
