occupational driver's license
How do I get an occupational driver's license?
An occupational license may be obtained through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WI-DOT) if your operating privileges have been suspended, provided you were valid to drive before you were charged with an operating while under the influence (OWI) offense, and no other conditions exist to prevent an occupational license from being issued.
qualifying for an occupational license
Occupational driver's licenses are not automatically issued, even though people may need them to continue to work. There are several factors with respect to your driver's record history that may prohibit you from obtaining an occupational license. A handful of the factors are given below as examples.
insurance
You must obtain SR-22 insurance before going to the Department of Transportation. Please refer to insurance.
suspension date
You may not obtain an occupational license before your suspension date begins.
prior suspensions
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation prohibits a person with two or more suspensions or revocations within a 12-month period from obtaining an occupational license.
administrative suspension
If you were administratively suspended, and Attorney Tracey Wood is defending you, you will receive instructions in the mail detailing information about SR-22 insurance and obtaining an occupational license. If you are working with another attorney, his or her office will be able to help you with that information.
